Without a win
for the season and off the back of a poor performance at
Spice of Life, Threemilestone Reserves traveled to Four Lanes
Res.
The game began as most
matches at this level do, with both sides flying out of
the blocks.
Both teams created chances but the away side should have
gone ahead within 5 minutes when Elliot Jolly, returning
from injury, blazed over an open goal with no pressure on
him, in fact it was probably harder to miss than score. Threemilestone
had the wind in their sails after this and several chances
went begging with both Jolly and Pascoe missing what you
can only describe as 'SITTERS'. It seemed that TMS would
rue the chances that they were spurning, until at last Jolly
finished a well worked move, to put TMS one up. Four Lanes
who had started brightly but then faded, seemed to be stung
into life and started to create some clear cut chances of
their own, however, they seemed to be suffering from the
same "Whoops Mrs Miggins I've dropped all the pies syndrome" which
was affecting the away sides strikers. Eventually something
had to give and unfortunately for the Stones it was their
goalkeeper David Hill who gave Four Lanes a gift wrapped
goal, as he managed to dive over a shot that was fired in
with all the pace of a pregnant snail. Although disappointing
TMS kept their spirits up and began to slowly become the
dominant force, several frustrating misses later, player-manager
Richard Luff sent a free kick into danger area, where Steve
Pascoe fired home after a scramble in the box. The half time
whistle blew with the score two - one to the visitors.
TMS suffered a blow
just after half time when Jolly had to be substituted with
a re-occurrence
of his knee injury that could see him sidelined for several
weeks. This meant a reshuffle with young Scott Whitfeld entering
the fray in the midfield and Luff being pushed up front.
This obviously unsettled the team and whilst making the readjustment
Four Lanes equalised as they managed to beat the offside
trap. The game became stretched from this point as both sides
looked to take the lead, and for the third time in the game
TMS grabbed the advantage when Luff played in Gary Pirret
who fired his shot past the inform Four Lanes keeper. As
the game progressed it was obvious that the Stones, were
tiring and the pressure was building, it was then that as
in previous games they let the game slip from their grasp
as Four Lanes scored three goals in 12 minutes, even though
they had switched to a four, four, two to bolster their defence.
Although both teams
gave their all, TMS had the better of the clear cut chances,
which should
have resulted in their first win of the season, unfortunately,
as the saying goes "GOALS WIN MATCHES, NOT CHANCES".
