After heavy
rain during the week it seemed that the game may not go ahead,
but fortunately
the weather cleared and the match was able to take place.
Pendeen arrived with just the bare eleven, whilst TMS had
an abundance of players. The new manager David Hill elected
to play a four four two formation with a message of "BACK
TO BASICS" (heard that somewhere before). The game began
with the home side on the attack, testing the Pendeen goalkeeper
early on who saved well; this was going to be an omen for
the remainder of the afternoon. The away side seemed
subdued for the first 20 minutes with the Stones exerting
all the pressure, with Jolly, Pascoe & Hocking
all coming close only to be foiled by the athleticism of the
away sides keeper. Then disaster struck, a hopeful ball into
the box saw the young TMS keeper loose the ball due to the
wet conditions and Pendeen took an unlikely lead, yet again
lady luck had run off with some bloke from down the chippy.
Give the home side their dues this did not dampen their spirits
and they continued to press, and each time they attacked they
made the away keeper work, but work he did and at half time
the score was one nil to the visitors.
"
Gaffer" Hill
made just one change at half time when he brought on Kyle Jones
for the injured Mike Waller.
At this point everything pointed to the Stones getting back
on level terms and going on to record their first victory of
the season, however, this is not a fairy tale and nothing ever
finishes happy ever after for the Reserves. As with the week
before the lads forgot to reset their alarm clocks and within
minutes of the restart found themselves three nil down, it
is fair to say that both goals had a fair amount of luck on
their side, but in football
you don't always get what you deserve. The home team continued
to batter the away side's goalmouth but with the ever young
Gordon Banks in goal the net was just
not bulging. As time ticked on the new man at the helm made
two further changes with young Gavin Counter and the experienced,
but well built, Luff coming on to add a little bit of spice
to the proceedings. The final throw of the dice seemed to be
working with both players being influential and creating chances
for those around
them. Luff hit the bottom of the post with a snap shot which
actually beat the keeper and then laid several good chances
on for Jolly, who unfortunately seems to be trying to emulate
the great Johnny Wilkinson. Man of the Match Gary Pirret came
more and more into his own and made several good breaks, but
as the time ticked on
and the bells began to chime you knew that the Stones where
about to go down to their twelfth loss of the campaign and
this was confirmed when Pendeen broke quickly, after confusion
had reigned whether a corner or not should have been given
to TMS at the other end, players stood still whilst the away
sides strikers didn't and within a split of a hares breath
Threemilestone found themselves four nil down, what a cruel
sport football can be.The remainder of the half was, as the
majority of the match had been, played in the Pendeen half
and penalty area. The
final whistle blew with the Reserves beaten but not down, surely
a win must be forthcoming. Next installment of this exciting
but often one sided saga continues next week at St Buryan.
