"AHAAH,
I can see the mist a rolling in from the sea, me hearty" now
that's what I call a really crap Cornish accent my beauties,
but the team traveled to
the end of the county, well as near as you can get, to face
a St Buryan side full of confidence, and placed second in the
league. The "Gaffer" decided to make a couple of
changes to the side that was unfortunate the week before, Luff
came
in for Elliot "Wilkinson" Jolly who had a more pressing
engagement, (something about having to meet his girlfriend
off some flight or other, she has only been away a few months!
no
commitment to the side). Young Rob Pentecost fitted into the
back four with Hocking back on first team duties and Darren "The
chopper" Woolcock was reintroduced into the midfield to
give it some steel.
With the wind swirling in all directions
the game kicked off with Threemilestone throwing caution to
the wind and attacking
their opponents, within a few seconds Luff had fired a shot
wide of the goal (very wide) but at least the Stones had thrown
down the gauntlet to their opposition. It is fair to say
that the majority of the play for the first 25 minutes was
with
the bottom team and several half chances went begging. St Buryan
slowly crept into the game and had a shot cleared off the line
and one which cannoned against the crossbar, however, it was
the away side who took the lead when Threemilestone's keeper,
Mark Carlyon, launched a long kick into the opposing half,
fortunately for the Stones their agile forward "Jabbathehutt" Luff
managed to direct his header into the path of Steve Pascoe
who out paced the St Buryan back line and slotted the ball
into the corner of the net, sending the away crowd into wild
celebrations, and giving TMS a well deserved lead for their
bright play. Normally I would now be sighing and groaning on,
how within seconds the lead was thrown away with some bizarre
goal that
has a million to one odds, but for once this was not the case.
From the restart it was obvious that the home side were shaken
and they soon found themselves under pressure again with a
shot flying over the bar from the TMS forwards after a well
worked corner. The half time whistle blew with not only the
Stones ahead but with no goals against.
The half
time team talk was upbeat for once and the "Gaffer" highlighted
one or two areas that the team needed to tighten up on. It
must have been some magical property in the air or the tea
at half time but somewhere along the way the team went
missing for the first fifteen minutes of the second half
because once again the Reserves seemed to step out of the
twilight
zone three one down, yes for the third
game in a row, TMS managed to commit "Hara-kiri" and
watch three points drain away like water down a plug hole.
St Buryan kicked off and from the start began to make in roads
into the TMS defence, then from a hopeful punt up field the
home sides striker managed to clip the ball over the Stone's
keeper who had hesitated in coming for the ball. It wasn't
long before the home side had moved into the lead, when from
a corner the TMS defence decided to play musical statues, but
forgot to include the St Buryan forward who punished them with
a well taken header, surely things couldn't get any worse but
it did when a well worked move from the home side saw them
bury the ball low into the Stone's net. Suddenly TMS awoke
from their slumber and started to zip the ball around, David
Hill
brought himself on up front and made
two further changes within 5 minutes, with Ryan "Titchmarsh
Healy" Eustice having to retire because of overgrown eyebrows
which had caused his right shoulder to become bruised. Although
the home side could have extended their lead as TMS pushed
forward it was the away side who scored when Pascoe
managed to turn a free kick across the box for James Butler
to tap in from 1 yard. Could Threemilestone pull this one
out
of the bag? Well no actually, although Man of the Match Steve
Pascoe came very close with seconds remaining when his snap
shot sailed just over the bar. The referee blew
the final whistle, with
Threemilestone going down to their Thirteenth defeat of
the season.Next week the Reserves are at home to Spice of
Life, come on you Stones .
