VICTORY!!
A word that has not
been associated with the reserve side this season. One
point out of forty can not be seen as
a great return, so it was with optimism that the Stones arrived
at Wendron hoping to exact revenge after a three two defeat
at Polstain Road by the same side in the early part of the
season.
With a strong wind
blowing and a pitch that resembled the marsh land of Outer
Mongolia, you knew that TMS would have
to battle hard without giving an inch in territory. Threemilestone
kicked off with the wind against them and from this moment
you could see that the next forty five minutes
were going to be extremely hard going for the away side. The
home side pressure grew throughout the half with several good
chances going begging, especially when the Wendron number
nine burst through the TMS defence only to fire his shot wide
of the target. Captain Mark Woolcock rallied the defence around
him and they began to frustrate the home side with their resilience
which had been missing in previous games. The young Stones
keeper ensured that the score remained all square until a succession
of corners eventually broke the deadlock. A corner from the
left hand side was swung in on the wind, unfortunately for
the Stones it was met by the Wendron skipper
who managed to get enough on the ball to send it thumping into
the back of the net. This did not dishearten the reserves who
tried their utmost to create chances of their own and man of
the match G.Counter
began to terrorise the home sides defence with his searching
runs. Elliot Jolly saw his header cleared
off the line, before a counter attack from the home side lead
to them doubling their lead firing past the
despairing dive of the TMS keeper. Half
time came with the score two nil to Wendron but “Gaffer” Hill
was pleased with the performance as every one of his players
had battled hard against the difficult conditions, TMS had
the wind in this half and if they could use it right would
surely get some kind of result out of it.
The second half saw
the home side come out of the blocks somewhat quicker than
the away side and they nearly scored from the
kick off but were thwarted by an excellent tackle from the
influential Rob Pentecost. It
seemed to be the kick up the backside that the Stones required
and they
slowly started to dominate
the game, with Wendron's attacks
becoming few and far between. It
was from this dominance that TMS clawed their way back into
the game. Martin Pentecost
crossed
the ball towards the
box, Luff latched onto the ball controlling with his left before
firing a low shot with his right past the Wendron keeper into
the left hand corner a “Pure MUTU moment” from
the big centre forward. Two
minutes later Luff sent a glorious ball down the right wing
for “Parlour” Jolly to latch onto, leaving
his marker in his wake, he cut in towards the goal, with this
Wendron's keeper rushed out of his goal, only to see
the ball sail over his had as Jolly struck a sublime chip with
his weaker foot to level the scores. The
home side became rattled and began to throw caution to the
wind and it nearly paid off when Carlyon in the TMS goal
had to make a double save to keep the scores level. Time started
to run out on the lads from Polstain Road yet they kept on
going, the gaffer made changes to bring fresh
legs on taking of the excellent Counter who had run himself
into the ground. Several
chances went begging as the away side pushed harder and harder,
Luff
managed a shot that
went through the keeper’s
legs only to stop on the line in the mud. Then a cross from
Jolly sailed over the keepers head but was just too high for
Steve Pascoe to header home. The corners began to mount and
from these the home side seemed to have a charmed life two
of such corners being hacked off
the line by panicking defenders. As
the half came to a close Jolly had a shot that beat the home
side keeper
but hit the post, it
looked like it was not
going to be the Stones day again. With
only a minute remaining the influential Blake Crouch slipped
a superb through ball to Ryan Eustice on the left hand
side the Wendron defender managed to get to him and slide the
ball into touch, with seconds remaining Eustice launched the
ball into the box and from the resulting pressure the home
sides defenders could only clear the ball to the edge of the
box, as the ref put his whistle to his mouth Darren Woolcock
struck the ball first time rifling the ball into the bottom
left hand corner, with that the final whistle blew.
This was a fantastic all round team performance with every
player playing their part in what was a well deserved:
VICTORY!!!!!!!
Well done lads, bring on Goonhavern.
