Before
this game both sides held a minutes silence as a mark of
respect for the passing of Mike Pascoe, brother of TMS
Manager Phil Pascoe and a good friend of the club.
Mike was always on hand to help when help was needed and
he will be sorely
missed by all at the club. Our sincere condolences go to
Mike's family, Phil and to the rest of the Pascoe Family
at this difficult time.
This
weekends visitors were Gulval, and following their recent
victory over title rivals Chacewater they
were obviously not a team to be taken for granted.
With
goalkeeper Kevin Pellow recalled to the side and Lee
Fairley replacing the absent Chris Bailey, TMS started
in their usual 3-5-2 formation but they got off to
a terrible start when in the first minute the visitors
caught the defence napping and a quick cross was bundled
in
when
the striker
miscontrolled the ball and bobbled it past the Stones
keeper. The TMS players collected themselves and
slowly
started to play their way back into the game. The visitors
however were continuing to be a threat. Now in light
of Mr Atkinsons recent troubles following after match
comments
I will be careful how I describe the visitors forward
line up but suffice to say sheer bulk was causing
the defence plenty of problems! TMS wasted several
good chances to equalise before they eventually did
manage
it with one of the rarest sights in football, an Anthony
Caddy header! and the half time whistle followed shortly
afterwards with the scores level at one a piece.
The second half began with TMS playing the better football,
using the width of the pitch to good advantage and
with the Gulval players beginning to wilt as the mercury
rose the Stones upped the pace again creating several
more good chances to take the lead. Dan Taylor finally
provided the breakthrough when his driven finish beat
the keeper and went in off the post. Mark Taylor quickly
added the third before Dan then grabbed his second
and TMS's 100th of the season from close range. With
Gulvals
attacking option now confined to a slow crawl TMS made
a treble substitution and Todd, Grose and Mark Taylor
made way for Underhill, Counter and Hocking to see
out the remainder of the game. Pick of the subs was
Counter
who got to the pace of the homesides game quickly and
began to run the Gulval left back ragged with some
great running and trickery down the line. TMS added
two further goals when
Ian Jay hit a 20 yard screamer that fizzed into the
far corner of the goal and Steve Howson completed the
scoring
with a fierce miskick that completely fooled the Gulval
keeper.
The final whistle blew and the players headed
for the pub and a well deserved cold one to celebrate passing
the 100 goal mark and with another three points in the bag
we awaited news of
title rivals Chacewater's result. Unfortunately it appears
for all our efforts the rest of the league are happy to just
hand the title to Chacewater as Gwinear became the second
team
in a row to turn up without enough players to play their
fixture and subsequently handed over three points!
The Maths therefore remain
simple, the title is out of our hands but we will be looking
for a good performance to take three points from Newlyn next
weekend and with Chacewater facing a tricky trip to St
Ives, a team whose pride and passion will mean Chacewater
will have to work hard for a win (for a change!), the race
is still on and anything can happen....
