A heavy
shower a couple of hours before kick off left the pitch
looking
like a paddy field, but with blue skies above it was not
going to get any worse and i think both sets of players
were happy
that the referee decided it was playable rather than spend
another week without the beautiful game!
With Newlyn creeping up the table relatively unnoticed into
fifth place and an unbeaten run of league games stretching
back to
late september we were well aware of the potential threat of
this team on our own unbeaten record. However Dan Taylor soon
put that idea out of mind, when after only five minutes
he got
on the end of a teasing Lee Fairley cross into the six yard box
to poke the ball past the keepers despairing dive. TMS then dominated
the next thirty minutes playing some good football considering
the conditions but failed to find the goals
that the build up play deserved. Then ten minutes before half
time Newlyn snatched an equaliser when Pellow fumbled a shot
and the attacker pounced to finish from a tight angle.
In the last few minutes of the first half birthday boy Ian Jay
entertained the crowd when stretching to keep the ball in play
right in front
of the crowd, he belly flopped into the huge puddle along the
touch line almost causing a tidal wave! (Nice one Ian, reminded
me of the John Smiths adverts)
The second half was fairly even with Newlyn having their best
spell of the game untill the sixty fifth minute when any hope
of them stealing some points were blown away with two goals in
two minutes. Firstly Anthony Caddy unleashed a thirty yard effort
that sailed into the top left hand corner and virtually seconds
after the kick off Dan Taylor made it 3-1 with a run into the
box and a neat finish, sliding the ball under the advancing keeper.
Marc Taylor made the game safe ten minutes later nodding in a
Tim
Grose cross to wrap up a good team performance, and although
Newlyn gave their all in the last ten minutes they couldn't find
a way back.
