After
the previous weeks 1-1 draw with Redruth everyone was aware
that three points were vital if we are to consider ourselves
serious title contenders. A couple of changes were made
to the starting line up, with Jeremy Hocking starting up
front to add more height and strength and Dan Taylor dropping
into midfield to use his pace against the ageing Redruth
midfield.
In the opening exchanges we were much better than the previous
week and Anthony Caddy opened the scoring after fifteen minutes
with a shot from 20 yards through a crowded penalty area and
into the bottom corner. Ten minutes later Marc Taylor rose above
the Redruth defence to score the second with a cracking header
from Caddy's free kick.
The half time score at 2-0 was good but with only 25 seconds
of the second half underway it was 3-0 when from the kick off
the ball was driven up to Hocking, who's shot was spilt by the
keeper and Taylor was on hand to tap in from three yards. With
these two teams normally so evenly matched and considering Redruth's
defensive record this season it was a bit of a shock to go 4-0
up when Tim Grose saw the keeper slightly off his line and sent
a dipping shot over his head from almost on the left hand touch
line. This gave Redruth a mountain to climb but with twenty minutes
to go were handed a lifeline when the Ref awarded them a penalty
which their captain duly converted. With time running out they
pushed everyone forward, and scored another
two goals from goalmouth scrambles to make it 4-3. The final
few minutes were played almost entirely in the Stones penalty
box
but the team were determined to hang on for the three points
and a well deserved victory.
